Dental Cleaning Q & A

What is a dental cleaning? A dental cleaning is a routine dental procedure that removes plaque and tartar deposits from your teeth. At a cleaning, Dr. Gilbert or one of his hygienists removes those deposits using specialized equipment that cleans more deeply than is possible with a toothbrush alone. Plaque and tartar can contribute to gum disease and tooth decay, so visiting Dr. Gilbert and his team for cleanings on a regular basis is critical.

What happens at my dental cleaning? A dental cleaning starts with a device that vibrates to loosen the tartar, and the hygienist washes away the loose tartar with a water sprayer. After this, the hygienist uses hand tools to remove any remaining deposits from the surface of your teeth and just underneath the gum line. The cleaning finishes with a polishing. Sometimes, Dr. Gilbert recommends applying fluoride as well.

Will my dental cleaning hurt? Cleanings should not cause pain, unless the buildup is severe. In fact, many of Dr. Gilbert’s patients report that they enjoy the cleaning because of the gentle approach of his team. Patients who’ve had painful cleanings in the past often report a better experience when they switch to Dr. Gilbert.

What if I feel anxious about teeth cleanings? Dr. Gilbert practices comfort dentistry. His goal is to make all of patients feel comfortable throughout their visit, including at regular dental cleanings. If you’re anxious about cleanings, Dr. Gilbert’s approach may include:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
  • Numbing of the area being cleaned
  • A visit from the office’s therapy dog
  • Music on an MP3 player
  • Videos to watch during treatment

In addition, the warm, upbeat atmosphere of the office helps you feel relaxed and at ease.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned? Dr. Gilbert recommends a dental cleaning once every six months to keep teeth as clean as possible. Patients who don’t have their dental cleanings regularly are at higher risk for complications, and you may find that your cleanings are more challenging if you’ve waited. Schedule a dental cleaning with Dr. Gilbert online today!
