Toothaches have a number of causes, including:
If a toothache lasts more than a couple of days or occurs with a fever, you need to make an appointment with Dr. Gilbert to find the root cause of the pain. In most cases, if your toothache doesn’t go away after a couple of days, it’s not going to go away without intervention.
A filling is a routine dental procedure that involves removing decay from a cavity in your tooth and replacing it with a filling material that seals the area and prevents decay from spreading to other parts of your tooth. Filling options include silver-colored metal amalgam or tooth-colored composite resin. Dr. Gilbert can help you determine which filling option is right for your needs.
While the American Dental Association and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration both agree that the dental amalgam commonly used to fill cavities presents no health risk, Dr. Gilbert has not used amalgam in his practice for over 15 years because of the concerns patients have about its safety.
Pulling, or extracting, a tooth is typically done only in serious cases of disease or infection. If a cavity is left untreated, for example, the decay can spread until your tooth can’t be saved. Leaving the tooth in your mouth would allow the decay to spread to other teeth. Dr. Gilbert instead extracts the tooth and replaces it with a bridge or implant. Sometimes, patients with small mouths require extraction to give teeth enough room.
Each dental insurance policy is different, but most cover restorative dental care because it is considered necessary to prevent further disease. Dr. Gilbert’s staff helps patients understand what is and isn’t covered for their oral care.
At Dr. Gilbert’s office, the staff strives to keep you comfortable throughout all dental procedures. Most restorative procedures require anesthetic, and the needle insertion that delivers anesthetic can cause some pain. To help reduce discomfort, Dr. Gilbert uses a topical anesthetic first and then injects the local anesthetic. Throughout the procedure, the staff keeps your comfort at the forefront.
